JIFF Becomes an ‘Outlet for Cinematic Expression’

The 18th edition of the Jeonju International Film Festival (JIFF) kicked off on April 27th on a beautiful spring evening in the historical city of Jeonju in the heartland of Korea. The nation’s foremost bastion of arthouse cinema, JIFF began its 2017 festivities under the slogan ‘Outlet for Cinematic Expression’.

During a ceremony held at the Jeonju Dome on Cinema Street in the center of the city, JIFF programmer LEE Sang-yong and actress PARK Hye-jin hosted the ceremony that took place in the packed out 3,000 seat venue.

Among the notable guests to take part in the ceremony were Ildikó ENYEDI, the director of the opening film On Body and Soul, local actors Su Ae, PARK Hae-il, JANG Hyuk, HA Ji-won, who is sitting on this year’s international competition jury, and JUNG Eun-chae, one of the short film competition jury members.

KIM Seung-soo, the Mayor of Jeonju related during an opening remark: “Jeonju International Film Festival has always been modest before citizens, audiences, and film industry insiders and has also prevented itself from being swayed by external pressure such as capital, political power, and social prejudices, which has set the slogan an outlet for cinematic expression and our pride.”

The 18th JIFF will take place until May 6th, during which time it will screen 229 titles from 58 nations.
