Period Action-Thriller Features Gianna JUN, LEE Jung-jae and HA Jung-woo

A year after it bowed on screens in Korea, where it collected a phenomenal 12.7 million admissions (USD 84.16 million), CHOI Dong-hoon’s star-studded period action-thriller Assassination will be granted a theatrical release in neighboring Japan beginning in July.

The news was reported by Japanese film site eiga.com, which speculated that the popularity of Gianna JUN due to her prior hits My Sassy Girl (2001) and Windstruck (2004) has created some interest in Japan for her latest role in CHOI’s blockbuster. JUN earned the Best Actress prize at the Daejong Film Award for her part in the film.

Assassination also picked up the Best Film accolades from the Korean Film Producers Association Awards and the Blue Dragon Awards. The film has screened at numerous prestigious international film events such as the BFI London Film Festival and the Busan and Göteborg International Film Festivals.

JUN stars alongside LEE Jung-jae (New World, 2013) and HA Jung-woo (The Yellow Sea, 2010) in the story which takes place during the Japanese Colonial Era and features Korean independence fighters seeking to take out pro-Japanese forces during the occupation. The film is set both in Korea and Shanghai. Prior to this, JUN and LEE featured together in CHOI’s previous film The Thieves (2012), another massive success in Korea, while JUN and HA were the leads of RYOO Seung-wan’s 2013 action-thriller The Berlin File.
