Korean films set for Stockholm festival

The 22nd Stockholm International Film Festival has announced its line-up to include a slew of films from the Republic of Korea including HONG Sang-soo’s<The Day He Arrives>, which previously screened in Cannes.

In the Asian Images section along with <The Day He Arrives>, the festival has selected up-and-coming director JEON Kyu-hwan’s <Dance Town>, about North Korean escapees, KIM Ki-duk’s self-portrait documentary <Arirang>, and NA Hong-jin’s brutal thriller <The Yellow Sea>.

The festival’s Twilight Zone will feature the popular indie film Invasion of <Alien Bikini> directed by OH Young-doo and <Bloody Fight in Iron Rock Valley>, an action-packed film with comedy and violence, directed by JI Hajean.

The Sthlm XXII Short Film Competition features South Korean films such as <Finis Operis>, directed by MOON Byoung-gon and <Ghost> by Dahci MA.

The 22nd Stockholm International Film Festival will be held Nov. 9 – 22. The festival will present over 170 premieres from 44 countries. This year’s opening film will be <Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy>, directed by Tomas Alfredson while the centerpiece gala film will be Andrea Arnold’s <Wuthering Heights> and the closing film will be <The Skin I Live in>, directed by Pedro Almodovar.

In past years, the Stockholm International Film Festival has also screened many other Korean works such as the omnibus queer film <All About My Father>, directed by LEE SangWoo, KIM Hun and HWANG Hee Kyung; J.K. YOUN’s tsunami blockbuster <Haeundae> starring HA Ji-won and SOL Kyung-gu, and Kim Ki-duk’s notorious film <The Isle>.
