RYU Abel, whose real name is RYU Sun-young, was born in 1988. While the other kids were raving about Hollywood films, she would rather watch Hong Kong films and grew particularly fond of Bruce LEE. She studied film music in high school, but following the retirement of her musical teacher she decided to change her major for filmmaking. She took part in a few musicals at the time, and by the end of high school she had grown more interested in acting to the point where, in 2007, she enrolled in the acting school of the Korea National University of Arts. Greatly impressed by <Crying Fist>, she sought to learn more about the director, RYOO Seung-wan, and upon learning that he intended to make a movie in the style of Bruce LEE, she found a way to land a role as a figurant in it and so made her first screen appearance in <The City of Violence>. Her first credited role, however, came in 2008 in <Let The Blue River Run>, as a supporting character. She participated in several short films and quickly became a regular in indie productions, while also getting minor roles in mainstream films such as <Haunters> (2010) and <Veteran> (2014). She developed a following for her roles in <The Treacherous> (2015) and, more importantly, in the critically acclaimed indie romance <Our Love Story> (2016), in which she played the role of the romantic interest.
In 2018, she took on her current stage name of Abel. She has remained quite active on stage, taking part not only in plays but also various artistic performances. She is the sister of actress and model RYU Hye-young.
