Actress KWON So-hyun, not to be confused with the pop singer of the same name, was born in 1987 in Andong in the North Gyeongsang province. Following high school in Andong and theatre studies in Seoul’s Sangmyeong University, she took her first steps as a performer on the musical stage, having been active since 2007. Some of her early stage productions were musical performances of Evil Dead and Hairspray. In 2010, she took home the Best New Actress prize from the Daegu International Musical Festival.
In 2013, she appeared in her first feature film, the low-budget indie <Love Scene>, in a supporting role. But it wasn’t until two years later that she made a name for herself, when she appeared in the leading role of SHIN Su-won’s third film <Madonna>. Invited to the Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard lineup, the film received strong reviews and was invited to screen all around the world. Her performance in particular, as a fallen woman who resorts to prostitution and is eventually left for dead, was singled out for praise. The role earned her numerous accolades, including the Best New Actress prizes from the Wildflower Film Awards Korea and the Korean Film Critics Association, as well as nominations from Blue Dragon and Chunsa Film Awards.
