LEE Jong-un, born in 1974, debuted in 2000 with a short called <Farewell>, soon followed by another one, <When Spring Comes> (2002). She has long been an assistant to LEE Chang-dong, participating in the director’s <Secret Sunshine> (2007) as a script supervisor, as well as the LEE Chang-dong-produced <A Brand New Life> (2009) and his following title <Poetry> (2010). After the 2014 Sewol Ferry disaster, which cost the lives of more than 300 people, mostly teenagers, LEE Jong-un volunteered with an association that provides a place where the bereaved families can gather, eat together and partake in various activities. There, she noticed that it was particularly difficult for the mothers when the birthday of their lost child was approaching, and the parents and friends would usually spend the day all together. With her first feature film, <Birthday> (2018), LEE intended to tell that story of moral support between grieving people. Although it debuted slowly, positive word of mouth brought the film to the top of the charts and past the million admission mark.
