KIM Do-young, born in 1970, had initially majored in filmmaking, but entered an acting class one day by accident and her sudden interest led her to start an acting career as part of Hanyang Repertory Company. Having first appeared in film in LEE Chang-dong’s acclaimed <Oasis> (2002), KIM was often cast by former classmates and friends. After a leading role in the indie <Written> (2007), the debut feature of <The Terror, LIVE> director KIM Byung-woo, KIM Do-young was awarded Best New Actress by the Busan Film Critics Association in 2009 for <The Day After> (2008). She could later be seen in the action-comedy <The Righteous Thief> (2009) and the surprise hit drama <Punch> (2011). As she had to stay away from the stage in 2011 due to complications of pregnancy, KIM decided to use that time try writing a simple screenplay, which she eventually film over four days and submit to the Mise-en-Scène Short Film Festival, where it was presented in 2012 under the title <The Visitor> (2012). Having found the process of screenwriting and casting actors more in tune with her aspiration, KIM decided to pursue this path in parallel to her acting career. While she moved to more commercial feature films such as <All About My Wife> (2012), <Return of the Mafia> (2012) and <Killer Toon> (2012), she prepared her second short, <Nothing> (2014), which won the Audience Award at the DMC Short Film Festival in 2014. After starting a master’s degree at the Korea National University of Arts in 2017, she directed <The Monologue> (2018), a short about the difficulty of juggling between child raising and an acting career that went on to win Best Picture and the Audience Award at the Seoul International Women’s Film Festival as well as Best Film in the City of Sadness (drama) section of the Mise-en-Scène Short Film Festival.
