HWANG Hyo-gyun is the co-founder and co-president of Technical Art Studio Cell. While his partner KWAK Tae-yong is usually in charge of animatronics and interactive mechanics, HWANG is more involved in special effects makeup and props. HWANG especially proved his talents in prosthetic makeup with PARK Chan-wook’s segment in horror anthology <Three Extremes> (2004), but also other horror movies such as <Cadaver> (2007) and <Possessed> (2009). Working closely together with KWAK, HWANG also participated in all the major films from PARK Chan-wook, KIM Jee-woon and BONG Joon-ho. In the hit caper film <Thieves> (2011), HWANG surprised audiences with the special mask worn by actor KIM Yoon-suk. In the historical drama <Masquerade> (2012), he also manufactured a full body dummy of actor LEE Byung-hun that fooled everyone. Thereafter, Cell notably worked on blockbuster pandemic disaster films <Deranged> (2012) and <The Flu> (2013), historical dramas <The Face Reader> (2013) and <KUNDO : Age of the Rampant> (2014), and action thrillers <The Yellow Sea> (2010) and <The Berlin File> (2012), to name a few. HWANG recently gained international exposure with his participation in Taiwanese war epic <Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale> (2011) and Chinese historical fantasy <Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon> (2013), but also with his essential contribution to internationally acclaimed Korean titles such as NA Hong-jin’s supernatural thriller <The Wailing> (2016) and YEON Sang-ho’s zombie action movie <TRAIN TO BUSAN> (2016). The latter earned him Technical Achievement Awards from the Blue Dragon Film Awards and the Korean Association of Film Critics.
