University of Suwon graduate HWANG Jung-eum began her career as a lead vocalist of the pop group Sugar in 2001 when she was just 16 years old. Three years later she left the band to pursue a solo career and became a guest of the variety show <Love Letter> for a few years, before making her narrative acting debut in the TV drama <The Person I Love> in 2007. She continued to appear in a number of TV shows but it was the 2009 sitcom <High Kick Through the Roof> that introduced her to a wider audience as a spunky yet clumsy student. This was also the year that she debuted on the big screen, appearing in the independent drama <Wish>, which premiered that October at the Busan International Film Festival.
As her star rose by virtue of her roles as variety show hosts or on popular TV dramas, she landed at no. 18 on Forbes’ 2011 list of the Top 40 Celebrities, as well as on a number of other lists. In 2010, she also appeared as one of the leads in the horror sequel <Death Bell 2: Bloody Camp>. The following years turned her into one of the top earners of the small screen world and she would next appear on the bog screen in 2015, when she took on the leading role in the indie comedy-drama <My Sister, the Pig Lady>, playing a farmer looking to woo her island’s sole bachelor. The film debuted at the Montreal World Film Festival and earned the Grand Prix from the Osaka Asian Film Festival.
