SHIM Eun-kyoung, born in 1994, started out as a child actor, playing younger versions of the likes of HA Ji-won, LEE Mi-youn and CHOI Kang-hee. After a first appearance in 2003 in the historical TV series <Jewel in the Palace>, she landed her first film role in <Thomas Ahn Joong Keun> (2004). First noticed in 2006 for her role as the young Hwang Jini, a legendary figure in Korean history, in the historical TV series of the same name, SHIM would often be praised for holding her own with the adult actors if not stealing the spotlight. She made another big impression playing a young mysterious girl with a dark past in the horror film <Hansel and Gretel> (2007), before appearing in a similar role in another horror picture, <Possessed> (2009). Noticed by JANG Jin, she joined the ensemble cast of his comedy <The Quiz Show Scandal> (2010), soon followed by the melodrama <Romantic Heaven> (2011). She was suddenly propelled to stardom in 2011 upon taking the lead in the box office sensation <Sunny> (2011), which attracted audiences from all ages thanks to its nostalgic appeal. The director KANG Hyoung-chul later said of her that she shouldn’t be considered as a child actor anymore because she is already an actor on her own merits. Her next film was <Masquerade> (2012), a historical drama in which she co-starred LEE Byung-hun. SHIM took some time off to focus on her studies in the United States but it was not long before she graced the screen again. That time came during the Lunar New Year in 2014 when she led the comedy <Miss Granny> (2013) to a huge box office haul and took home top acting awards at the Baeksang Arts Awards and the Chunsa Film Festival, cementing her status as one of the industry’s biggest young stars in the process. SHIM switched genres by tackling the thriller <Missing You> (2015), where she played a young woman who waits 15 years to exact her revenge following her father’s death. In 2015, SHIM also lent her voice to YEON Sang-ho’s zombie animation <Seoul Station> (2016), the prequel to the critically acclaimed <TRAIN TO BUSAN> (2016). She then took a shot at indie films with the coming-of-age drama <Queen of Walking> (2016) before playing a gamer and genius hacker in the crime-action <Fabricated City> (2016). With political thriller <The Mayor> (2017), she made once again a strong impression by taking on the complex role of a rookie publicist who becomes the campaign aide of a corrupt politician.
