Shin Bokyeong is a production designer with three decades of experience. Born in 1970, she majored in visual design at Hongik University, and it was during that curriculum that she took an interest in film and considered a career as a film director. Through one of her professors, Ahn Sangsoo, who was attached as art director on <Blue In You> (1992), Shin joined the project as an assistant director and thus made her debut in the industry. While working there, she soon realized that her sensibilities were more aligned with experimental and arthouse filmmaking, which inevitably would be difficult to make a living out of it, not to mention the glass ceiling she would have to face as a woman. And so, she reasoned that her best bet to keep working in films was to serve as an art director. She was first credited as such in <Out To The World> (1994), and later worked in similar capacity on <The Contact> (1997). She was then promoted to production designer for the melodrama <Over The Rainbow> (2002), and in 2004 she won the Grand Bell Award for Best Production Design for her contribution to the war drama <TaeGukGi: Brotherhood Of War> (2004). Although her credits were fewer and far between in the 2010s, she still takes on new projects from time and time, and so in 2022 she worked on Davy Chou’s <Return to Seoul>.
