BYUN Jang-ho made about 90 films in a career that spans more than 30 years. He entered the Chungmooro scene as an assistant director to [SHIN Sang-ok] (a.k.a. Siman SHIN) and debuted with <The Sun is Mine> in 1967. With a belief that “a good movie is one that is moving and liked by many,” he worked mainly on genres with popular appeal, such as action and melodrama. After a few hit movies, he went into production. After making <The Red Gate> in 1972, BYUN started working on literary movies based on popular novels. <The Red Gate>, which poked fun at feudalistic customs through a portrayal of the deceitful lives of two generations of widows, grabbed awards at numerous film festivals. In <Potato>(1987), he aptly used the tool of filmmaking to convey the erotic feel of the original. <Love and Farewell>(1993) was his latest work.
