One of the most respected Korean actors of the 1990s, MOON Sung-keun was born in Tokyo in 1953 and following studies at Sogang University, he worked an office job for eight years before turning to the stage in 1985, where he became a prominent figure in the contemporary theater renaissance. His first film role followed in 1990, in PARK Kwang-su’s <Black Republic>. Throughout the 90s he appeared in some of the era’s most important films, such as PARK Kwang-su’s <Berlin Report> (1991), <To the Starry Island> (1993) and <A Single Spark> (1995), JANG Sun-woo’s <The Road to the Race Track> (1991), <To You From Me> (1994) and <A Petal> (1996), LEE Myung-se’s <Bitter and Sweet> (1995) and LEE Chang-dong’s debut film <Green Fish> (1997). At the turn of the millennium, he started a new partnership, appearing in his first HONG Sangsoo film <Virgin Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors> (2000). He would later appear in the auteur’s <Woman on the Beach> (2006), <Oki’s Movie> (2010) and <In Another Country> (2012). MOON also began a political career in 2009 and in 2012 became the temporary chairman for the Democratic United Party. Reflecting his political tendencies, he appeared in CHUN Ji-young’s hard-hitting political dramas <Unbowed> (2011) and <National Security> (2012).
