After studies at the Japan Academy of Moving Images, he worked as a producer for TV and commercials in Japan, Australia and Hong Kong since 1986. He started his career in cinema as assistant director of Kazoku Cinema (1998), and was invited to the 53rd Berlin International Film Festival for his short film 32nd DEC: Where is Mr. President? (2003). His first feature film Driving With My Wife's Lover(2007) was invited to over 30 international film festivals, including Sundance and Rotterdam where the film won 9 prizes. A Korean-Japanese co-production film Tokyo Taxi (2010) is his second feature. KIM has continued creating his various ranges through Red Vacance Black Wedding (2011). Three years later, he produced the indie feature <Sookhee>, which screened at the 2014 Jeonju International Film Festival. He then returned to the director’s chair for <Heartbreak Hotel>, a film starring KANG Ji-hwan, shot entirely in the US and debuting at the Osaka Asian Film Festival in 2015.
