Born in 1971, KIM Tae-gyun first thought of making movies after he happened to watch by chance on television JANG Jun-hwan’s short <2001 Imagine> (1994). He entered the Hankyoreh Film School, and after graduation he was lucky enough to work on KWAK Kyung-taek’s directing debut, <M.P. / Military Police & Military Prisoner> (1995). This marked the beginning of a friendship and a two-decades-long collaboration, KIM serving as First Assistant Director on KWAK’s <3Pm Paradise Bath House > (1997) and <Dr. K> (1998). He later held the same position for KIM Sung-hong’s <A Growing Business> (1999) and <Say Yes> (2001). His first directing effort came in 2010 with his short <Confession>, which was followed by his feature debut <Spring, Snow> (2012), based on one of his screenplays.
In 2012, a current affairs TV program on a detained murderer who revealed a list of victims who were unaccounted for triggered his inspiration. The following day, he met the detective in charge of the case and started working on a script but decided to wait until the conclusion of the trial before writing the ending. In the meantime, KWAK agreed to supervise the project as executive producer and co-write the script. The project finally came to completion came back in 2017 under the title <Dark Figure of Crime>, with KIM Yun-seok in the lead.
