KWAK Jae-yong is the director of <My Sassy Girl>(2001), a romantic comedy that swept across Asian movie markets. With the movie’s popularity, its’ heroin, [Gianna JUN]) became a major star. KWAK’s early movies were emotional melodramas. His debut film, <A Sketch Of A Rainy Day> (1990), was successful partly a result of its popular theme song. When KWAK Jae-yong was reported to direct <My Sassy Girl>, which was based on an Internet novel, then an unproven medium, some had reservations about the decision. The movie, however, quickly won over moviegoers’ hearts with a traditional love story featuring two youthful and perky characters. The director considers <The Classic> (2003), a more classical love story, to be his best work. The success of <My Sassy Girl> provided a steppingstone for KWAK, who later directed <Cyborg Girl> (2008), a joint production involving Japanese actors and staff. During the 16th Busan International Film Festival in 2011, KWAK announced the production of <Yang Guifei>, a co-production with financing from China and Japan. However he eventually exited that project, as well as <Wearing Flower Shoes>, a project focused on comfort women that will shoot in Korea and China. His first feature co-production with China came in 2014, when the romcom <Meet Miss Anxiety> was released, which grossed over USD 22 million on the mainland. Returning to the Korean industry, KWAK next made the film <Time Renegade>, a romance thriller in which LIM Soo-jung played two women, one in 1983, the other in 2015, who winds up in the dreams of the men in the other’s life.
