Well-Received THE DAY I DIED Struggles in 3rd Place Debut

With COVID-19 cases steadily on the rise once more in Korea, the local box office experienced a slight downturn after posting increases for three weeks in a row. Slowing around 15%, admissions stood at 580,000, with 85% of the market share being snapped up by homegrown titles, which dominated the top three spots.

CJ Entertainment’s caper film Collectors managed to hold on to first place on the charts after slowing 38% over its second frame, during which it welcomed 263,000 viewers (USD 2.24 million). To date, the film has filled 1 million seats (USD 8.37 million) and with light competition on the way it should be able to add to its total.

During its fourth week on the charts, the drama SAMJIN COMPANY ENGLISH CLASS was down 44%. 104,000 spectators (USD 883,000) snatched up tickets over the weekend, bolstering its total to a respectable 1.44 million entries (USD 11.56 million).

Despite strong reviews and audience scores, the KIM Hye-soo-starring thriller THE DAY I DIED : UNCLOSED CASE struggled during its debut, as it welcomed just 101,000 filmgoers (USD 874,000) over the weekend. The film has sold 128,000 tickets (USD 1.08 million) over its first four days and will need word of mouth to kick in and save it if it wants to survive on the charts.

The Japanese animation Violet Evergarden: The Movie claimed a distant fourth place in its debut weekend, filling 15,000 seats (USD 119,000) over the weekend, with 20,000 admissions (USD 162,000) counted over four days.

The British animation Octonauts & the Great Barrier Reef was just behind in fifth place, with 12,000 sales (USD 73,000) over the three-day frame and 13,000 entries (USD 81,000) counted since its Thursday launch.

Though no major film is expected to shake up the charts this coming weekend, several new offerings will make their way into theaters, including the US thriller Run, from Searching director Aneesh CHAGANTY, David FINCHER’s Netflix offering Mank, and the K-horror Yoga Class 2.
