Market Continues to Struggle without Major New Content

Business stayed virtually flat for the third consecutive week amid a depressed Korean box office, with 179,000 sales recorded over the three-day weekend. A three-year-old rerelease topped the charts as audiences continue to have limited options in theaters, and local releases accounted for just 6% of the total.

Returning to theaters following its original late 2017 release, when it stuck around for a long time in theaters, Hugh JACKMAN-fronted musical The Greatest Showman reclaimed the top spot at the box office during a Covid-19 rerelease. The Hollywood showstopper brought in 40,968 viewers (USD 206,000) over the weekend, raising its lifetime total to 1.45 million admissions (USD 9.52 million).

Continuing its solid run in theaters was the Daniel RADCLIFFE action-thriller Escape From Pretoria, which slipped to second place but actually rose 12% in its third week. The film added 36,783 entries (USD 266,000) to raise its total to 126,975 spectators (USD 896,000) to date.

The French romantic-comedy La Belle epoque opened in third place with 16,294 sales (USD 119,000) over the weekend and 21,795 tickets (USD 154,000) sold over its first five days.

Down two spots and 49% in its third weekend was the Spanish horror-thriller The Platform, which welcomed another 11,584 viewers (USD 90,000), giving it 51,828 sales (USD 388,000) to date.

The Hitman’s Bodyguard returned to theaters two years after its original release with a special version to claim fifth place with 7,262 entries (USD 54,000), with 10,424 viewers (USD 73,000) counted since its launch on Wednesday.

A variety of new titles will crowd theaters this coming week, including the Korean film 9 Monks (translated title), the Spanish horror 32 Malasana Street, the Kristen STEWARD-led thriller Underwater and the British comedy Misbehaviour. The real test for the Korean box office will come next week, which is scheduled to welcome the mystery-thriller Intruder, the first major local release since late February.
