BRING THE SOUL: THE MOVIE Debuts in 4th Place
With the late summer box office in full swing, admissions remained very strong as they were almost flat with the previous week at 3.6 million sales. Meanwhile, thanks to a strong holdover and solid new releases, the domestic industry saw its market advantage rise to a mighty 88%.
Down only 29% after its stellar opening, the disaster action-comedy smash EXIT retained pole position by posting another 1.45 million entries (USD 10.56 million). This raised the CJ Entertainment title’s total to 5.79 million viewers (USD 40.82 million) in 12 days, which was already the seventh best performance of the year, and on Monday morning the film overtook Captain Marvel to claim sixth place. Reservations remain strong on the well-liked film, which bodes well for reaching future milestones.
Showbox’s Japanese Colonial Era independence fighter action-drama The Battle: Roar to Victory, with RYU Jun-yeol and YOO Hae-jin, was a very close second during its debut, as it managed to shift 1.41 million tickets (USD 10.23 million), although on the daily charts it rose to first by a whisker on Sunday. Over five days, the film has brought in 2.03 million spectators (USD 14.37 million) and with decent audience reactions, not to mention its timely patriotic theme in the midst of an intensifying trade dispute between Korea and Japan, the WON Shin-yun-directed film could go considerably further.
Hollywood animation The Secret Life of Pets 2 remained in third place, even as it slowed 63%. With another 128,000 tickets (USD 851,000) sold, the film has now reached 934,000 viewers (USD 5.88 million).
After debuting midweek in third place, the BTS event film BRING THE SOUL : THE MOVIE posted a fourth place weekend debut with 116,000 seats (USD 887,000) filled and a total of 274,000 sales (USD 1.95 million) since its Wednesday premiere.
Falling three spots and a steep 81% was the local occult action-thriller The Divine Fury, which mustered just 114,000 viewers (USD 850,000) in its second weekend, giving it a disappointing 1.53 million admissions (USD 10.1 million) total in 12 days.
Hollywood should reclaim some ground this week with the release of the action franchise spinoff Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, which is currently topping the reservations charts. However, both EXIT and The Battle: Roar to Victory are well positioned to threaten for the top spot.
