JUSTICE LEAGUE Crashes in 2nd Week

Theaters saw a slight uptick this weekend as students celebrated the end of the college entrance exams which had been delayed a week due to an earthquake in the Pohang region. All told, almost two million tickets were snatched up over the frame as a hot new local title boosted the local share to 66%.

Showbox scored their fourth chart-topping debut this year with crime thriller The Swindlers. Featuring superstar Hyun-bin, fresh off the Lunar New Year hit Confidential Assignment, and YOO Ji-tae and helmed by first-timer JANG Chang-won, the film had a strong debut during which it filled 1.21 million seats (USD 9.14 million). Over five days it has already accrued 1.69 million entries (USD 12.4 million).

Relinquishing its crown and over two thirds of its audience in week two was the DC Comic team-up Justice League. With another 259,000 spectators (USD 1.96 million), the film has brought in a tepid 1.62 million admissions (USD 12.31 million) to date.

Down a spot and 50% was Blumhouse’s horror-comedy Happy Death Day, which continued to impress as it banked another 146,000 viewers (USD 1.08 million). After 19 days, the film is sitting on 1.31 million admissions (USD 9.6 million) total.

Still a presence on the charts in its fifth week was Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok, which sold another 99,000 tickets (USD 737,000) to bolster its total to 4.75 million spectators (USD 35.34 million).

Closing out the top five was the animated film Loving Vincent, which has been a tremendous success on limited release. In its third week the film rose 27%, as it banked another 49,000 viewers (USD 377,000), giving it a healthy 201,000 admissions haul (USD 1.49 million) to date.

Viewers will be spoiled for choice in the coming days as two new local thrillers, Forgotten and The Chase, go head to head with Murder on the Orient Express, while The Swindlers should also prove potent in its sophomore frame.
