A SINGLE RIDER Opens in 3rd

Multiplexes welcomed a large amount of new releases this past weekend but with several titles dead on arrival business experienced a slight dip with 2.1 million entries recorded. Despite losing control of the top spot, local films still made up a hefty portion of sales over the weekend, with a 42% market share spread out over several holdovers and new releases.

Opening in first place was M. Night Shyamalan’s new high concept film Split with James McAvoy in the lead. The film scored 699,000 admissions (USD 5.3 million) over the weekend and a total of 967,000 viewers (USD 6.94 million) spread out over its first five days. However, the initial intrigue may quickly wear off with bigger releases on the horizon and a mixed reaction from crowds.

Down 42% in its sophomore frame was local court drama New Trial, which added 440,000 tickets (USD 3.27 million) for a new haul of 1.89 million spectators (USD 13.32 million). New Trial has joined the ranks of previous successful Korean court dramas such as The Client (2011) and The Attorney (2013).

Down a spot and 53% in its third weekend was the local thriller Fabricated City. The film brought in another 190,000 viewers (USD 1.4 million) and has now reached 2.38 million admissions (USD 16.89 million).

Warner Bros.’ second Korean production A Single Rider, with local star LEE Byung-hun in the lead, had a disappointing start with just 155,000 tickets (USD 1.16 million) shifted in fourth place. With 262,000 entries (USD 1.78 million) since Wednesday, the film demonstrates the continued weakness of local melodrama beyond the small screen.

Remaining flat as it dipped 28% was the Hollywood animation Trolls, with another 133,000 tickets (USD 909,000) sold and a new total of 467,000 viewers (USD 3.05 million).

Outside the top five, Hollywood action titles John Wick 2 and Hacksaw Ridge opened with 113,000 (USD 885,000) and 74,000 admissions (USD 541,000) in sixth and seventh, respectively.

Down in ninth, new local sci-fi thriller Lucid Dream had a disappointing debut with just 39,000 entries (USD 289,000) recorded over the weekend and 86,000 admissions (USD 563,000) across its first five days.

Meanwhile, Moonlight topped the diversity chart with 22,000 viewers (USD 169,000) and came in 12th overall.

This coming week will see local thriller Bluebeard go up against Hollywood tentpole Logan.
