THE THRONE Cedes Crown after Chuseok

Business saw a predictable drop last weekend in the wake of the Chuseok holidays yet 2.05 million viewers still found their way to theaters as local fare maintained a slight edge with a 50% share of the market.

Following a decent debut, word of mouth has clearly kicked in for the Anne Hathaway-Robert De Niro workplace comedy The Intern, which rose an impressive 58% in its sophomore weekend. The film added 532,778 viewers (USD 3.78 million) for a stellar 1.46 million (USD 10.07 million) to date.

Relinquishing the top spot in its third weekend was Chuseok period hit The Throne which suffered a heavy 60% drop following its dominant presence during the holidays. The LEE Joon-ik film attracted another 492,525 viewers (USD 3.36 million) for strong 5.57 million (USD 37.63 million) total to date. Though reactions have been positive, word on the street was not strong enough to turn it into a leggy hit.

Dipping a slight 16% was THE ACCIDENTAL DETECTIVE, which has now turned into a minor hit after a 472,536 viewer (USD 3.27 million) weekend and a total just over the two million admissions (USD 13.55 million) mark. Just behind, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials pulled in another 191,521 viewers (USD 1.31 million) as it begins to wind up its run. The film has left an impression on the charts with 2.61 million spectators (USD 17.67 million).

Still on the charts, RYOO Seung-wan’s Veteran added another 82,578 filmgoers (USD 574,501) to bring its total to a whopping 13.34 million viewers (USD 89.83 million). Rising once again in the rankings, the action-comedy soared above Avatar to become the third most successful movie of all time in Korea, behind last year’s local hits Roaring Currents and Ode to My Father.

In limited release, HONG Sang-soo’s Right Now, Wrong Then found another 10,137 (USD 74,538) spectators in its second weekend, bringing its total to an impressive 47,453 viewers (USD 339,026).

Hoping to replicate the success of recent sci-fi fare such as Gravity (2013) and Interstellar in Korea, Ridley Scott’s The Martian, starring Matt Damon, looks set to conquer the charts this coming weekend.
