May Box Office Report: Minor Increase in Revenue and Admissions

Total box office revenue for May was $129 million from 17.7 million admissions. This represents a minor year-on-year increase of 8% in terms of revenue and 4.8% in terms of admissions.
 
Foreign films took an overwhelming market share of 68.5% in May, earning $89.2 million from 12.1 million admissions. This marks a significant increase of $28.0 million in box office revenue, in comparison to the same month last year.
 
The month's top foreign film was Avengers: Age of Ultron which managed 5.81 million admissions. Partly shot in Seoul, the Marvel superhero sequel took 1,634 screens out of 2,368 and earned $43.67 million in May only.
 
Second and third places were taken by Mad Max: Fury Road and Spy which respectively earned $23.07 million from 2.95 million admissions and $11.12 million from 1.55 million admissions.
 
Although the market share for local films remained lower, the figure went up slightly from last month at 31.5%. Local films all together earned $39.5 million from 5.56 million admissions in May, with a year-on-year drop of $18.6 million in sales and 2.73 million in admissions.
 
The Chronicles of Evil amassed $14.58 million from 2.04 admissions in May and became the top local film of the month, followed by Cannes noir drama Coin Locker Girl that earned $9.57 million from 1.29 million admissions.
 
Diversity films managed 360,000 admissions, enjoying a rise of 70,000 from May, 2014. Still Alice was the top diversity film of the month with 96,000 admissions.
