When Silence Speaks: How Tongue Conquered SXSW

The wife in the film does not say a single word. While her husband's ceaseless talk fills the room, the camera follows only the gaze of the silent woman. This "wordless film" has won the top prize at the Midnight Short Competition of South by Southwest (SXSW) — the first Korean film ever to do so. The film in question is Tongue, a horror-comedy directed by Lim Da-seul.

Now in its 33rd edition in 2026, SXSW is one of the world's largest multidisciplinary arts festivals, merging film, music, and interactive (technology) programming in Austin, Texas. The Midnight Short Competition is the section dedicated to genre films including horror and dark comedy. Tongue became both the first Korean film to be selected for this section and the first to win its top prize.

The jury composition is equally noteworthy. The panel comprised Rebekah McKendry, Professor of Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California; Adam Hendricks, Co-Founder of Divide/Conquer; and Dana Gills Mycoo, EVP of Production & Development at Monkeypaw Productions — the production company founded by director Jordan Peele. In their citation, the jury praised the film's sharp and satirical portrayal of a wife subjected to relentless mansplaining* and its ability to draw the audience in through the unique perspective of a wife who speaks not a single word. They further remarked that the film demands our attention, marking Lim as a vital new voice whose transition into feature filmmaking cannot come soon enough.

*Mansplaining: A portmanteau of "man" and "explaining," referring to the condescending act of a man explaining something to a woman under the assumption that she lacks knowledge of the subject.

Tongue unfolds a sudden, unexpected incident between a married couple through the lenses of horror and comedy. While transposing the universal gender dynamic of mansplaining into the intimate domestic narrative of a Korean household, the film achieves genre-level sophistication through surreal visuals and meticulous sound design — a "genre universality" that transcends cultural context. Lim Da-seul made her feature debut with Home Sweet Home (2016), and has continued directing short films including 18k (2020) and Kkamppak Kkamppak (2022). She previously won the Short Film Grand Prize at the 29th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFAN) in 2025 for Tongue.

Korea's relationship with SXSW dates to its first invitation in 2003. Since Jo Eun-hee's Inner Circle Line received a Special Jury Prize in the narrative feature section in 2006, recent years have seen a growing presence in the shorts categories, including Kangmin Kim's animation KKUM (2021) and Huiju Park's Welcome Home Freckles (2025). The success of Tongue is the latest chapter in this trajectory.

One notable aspect of Tongue's achievement is the pathway from BIFAN to SXSW. This suggests that domestic genre film festivals are functioning as real and effective pipelines connecting Korean genre cinema to the global festival market beyond their own borders. The involvement of a Monkeypaw Productions executive as a jury member is likewise a signal that Korean genre short films are now registering on the radar of the Hollywood industry ecosystem.
