PARASITE Star to Do Double Duty on the Croisette

A few weeks ago, it was already revealed that Korean star Song Kangho would be returning to the Cannes Film Festival, but now, in addition to a new film, it appears he will also there as a member of the main competition jury.

The acclaimed Parasite (2019) actor is only the fifth Korean person to be invited to serve on the main jury in Cannes, following director Shin Sangok in 1994, director Lee Changdong (2009), actress Jeon Doyeon (2014) and director Park Chanwook (2017). Song’s jury will be led by American filmmaker Spike Lee.

Song will also be gracing the Croisette as part of the cast of Han Jaerim’s Emergency Declaration, which is screening out of competition. The disaster film is Song’s sixth project to be invited to Cannes, following Bong Joonho’s The Host (2006), Lee Changdong’s Secret Sunshine​ (2007), Kim Jeewoon’s The Good, The Bad, The Weird (2008), Park Chanwook’s Thirst (2009) and, Parasite also from director Bong.

All three of Song’s films invited to Cannes’ main competition have walked away with a prize - Jeon Doyeon earned Best Actress for Secret Sunshine, Thirst was awarded the Jury Prize, and Parasite became the first-ever Korean film to win the Palme d’Or, the festival’s highest accolade.

This year’s 73rd Cannes Film Festival will take place from July 6 to 17.
