Korean Cannes Midnighter Heads to North America

Already a hit at home, the Korean thriller The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil picked up a North American distribution during its time at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this month, where it was having its international festival premiere as a midnight screening out of competition.

Don LEE (aka MA Dong-seok) stars as a tough gang boss who is assaulted on his way home one evening by a deranged serial killer (KIM Sung-kyu). As the killer’s only living witness, he enters into an unlikely partnership with a detective (GIM Mu-yeol) who despises hoodlums.

Sylvie KIM of K-MOVIE ENTERTAINMENT and Doris PFARDRESCHER of Well Go USA negotiated the deal. PFARDRESCHER related that “As a fan of the genre mashup, The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil delivers everything that we love in crime, action, foreign thrillers.”

The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil was the second major Korean pickup for Well Go during the Cannes film market, following their acquisition of the acclaimed indie drama House of Hummingbird (2018) earlier in the festival.

Prior to the festival, news broke that LEE would reprise his role in an English-language remake of the film, which will be produced by Sylvester STALLONE’s production company Balboa Productions. The film is the second from director LEE Won-tae, following his 2017 period prison drama MAN OF WILL.

Having opened in Korea on May 15, the film has gone on to do robust business, so far welcoming 3.08 million visitors (USD 22.46 million).
