Originally announced in January last year, SHIM Hyung-rae’s D-War sequel, entitled D-War II: Mystery of the Dragon, has secured funding in China and is set to begin production as a Korea-China co-production in June, with a release to follow in mid-2017, ten years after the original.

SHIM’s D-War, which was shot in the United States and went well over budget (originally pegged at USD 30 million but reportedly costing as much as USD 75 million make), featured a good and an evil celestial dragons laying waste to Los Angeles. The film was a hit in Korea, garnering 7.86 million admissions (USD 55 million). This time around, the state-controlled Chinese Culture Group is on board to finance the film to the tune of USD 77 million, much higher than the USD 20 million budget that was reported a year ago.

The sequel will be set in 1969 in a parallel history where a Cold War is taking place between the US and China, as they race to achieve the first moon landing. The film will be produced by H&R Global Pictures in China.

During a press event held in Beijing, Director SHIM stated that the project “will carry significant meaning in that South Korea and China get to forge collaboration in the video contents sector after their free trade agreement deal.” SHIM also reportedly said that he expects the film to generate revenue in excess of RMB 4 billion (USD 618 million).
