Korean Titles Selected for Toronto Kids International Film Festival

Two Korean films have been invited to next month’s TIFF Kids International Film Festival in Toronto. YOON Ga-eun’s The World of Us and KIM Sung-ho’s How To Steal A Dog (2014) will join films about children’s issue from around the world beginning on April 8th. TIFF Kids is a sister event of the Toronto International Film Festival which takes place every September.

The feature debut of director YOON Ga-eun, following her acclaimed shots Guest (2011) and Sprout (2013), The World of Us debuted last month in the Generations section of the Berlin International Film Festival. Starring CHOI Soo-in, SEOL Hye-in and LEE Seo-yeon, each in their feature film debuts, the film tells the tale of 10-year-old girls who experience high and lows in their relationships, often due to external pressures.

How To Steal A Dog, which initially debuted in Korean theaters in December of 2014 before being granted a re-release in early 2015 following disputes over unfair exhibition practices, is based on a 2007 novel by writer Barbara O’Connor. Featuring KIM Hye-ja (Mother, 2009) and GANG Hye-jung (Old Boy, 2003) alongside child actors LEE Re and HONG Eun-taek, the film follows children who kidnap a wealthy woman’s dog in the hopes of collecting a large reward to help their mother’s financial woes. The film has screened around the world and earned prizes from the Ale Kino! International Young Audience Film Festival and International Children’s Film Festival India.
