Blockbuster Production Brings Big Business to Korea

Following weeks of speculation, Marvel Studios’ upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron has confirmed that it will film key segments in Seoul. Rumors spread like wildfire in the Korean media earlier this year that a significant part of the Hollywood production would be coming to Seoul and casting a local actress in a key villain role.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said that ‘South Korea is the perfect location for a movie of this magnitude because it features cutting-edge technology, beautiful landscapes and spectacular architecture.’ Feige also went on to thank the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism for enabling the shoot to go ahead.

YOO Jin-ryong, Korea’s Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism mentioned that ‘We're very excited to have the production in Korea, and also expect this to serve as the footstep of many more opportunities yet to come’.

The first film’s director Joss Whedon returns to helm the sequel, which will reunite him with stars Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L Jackson. Joining the sequel’s cast will be James Spader, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen.

In addition to Korea, the new Avengers will also shoot segments in London, South Africa and Italy, with further locations to be announced. The first Avengers, with 7.07 million admissions, was Korea’s most popular foreign release in 2012 while Iron Man 3, another blockbuster taking place in the Marvel universe, topped nine million admissions to become last year’s top foreign draw.
