YOON Ga-eun’s Short to Compete in Germany

The 64th Berlin International Film Festival is just a few weeks away and has already begun to unveil parts of its lineup. Its latest announcement was for the Generation 14plus and Kplus sections, and the latter will include the Korean short film Sprout by director YOON Ga-eun.

As they are preparing the offering for their grandfather’s ancestral rites, a family forgets to buy bean sprouts. While on her way to get some, a child gets lost in the market and winds up in the in a house with an old man in a straw hat. When she eventually returns, she places a sunflower she received from the man on the offering table.

Korean National University of Arts student YOON Ga-eun initially presented her work at the 18th Busan International Film Festival last October. Sprout was premiered in the festival’s Wide Angle: Korean Short Competition, where it was given a special mention for the Sonje Award.

The festival’s Generation section features films aimed at children 14 and over in the 14plus program and those over four years of age in the Kplus lineup. SHIN Su-won’s Pluto was handed a special mention from the Generation section during last year’s Berlinale. Last year’s section also featured KIM Jung-in’s short Cheong.

The 2014 Berlinale’s full lineup will be revealed on January 28th. The festival will take place from February 6th to 16th.
