The Korea Media Rating Board has re-evaluated The Weight and handed it an 18+ rating. Unhappy with the first decision given by Korea Media Rating Board as ‘Inappropriate for screening’ on February 12th, Treefilm, the production company of The Weight requested reconsideration, and the board finally changed the rating of the film after a meeting.
“We had an in-depth discussion about our first decision considering if it was a precise evaluation and strict judgement”, said a representative of the Korea Media Rating Board, “It received a new rating based on the opinions that the theme, contents, lines and visual expressions are too explicit and stimulative for adolescents to view and there are significantly vulgar expressions so even adults need to be cautious.” It had been a while since they had a meeting for re-rating a film. The last time was on June 30th in 2011.
The Weight, directed by JEON Kyu-hwan and starring CHO Jae-hyun, was the winner of the Queer Lion award at the Venice Film Festival of last year. It also picked up the Best Director award at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival and the International Film Festival of India. This year it screened in the competition section of the Deauville Asian Film Festival and Fantasporto. The Weight can now be released in theaters following its re-rating.
