5 Korean Films Invited to Dutch Film Festival
Korean cinema look to be getting off to a great start in early 2013 with a slew of invitations from major film festivals. The Berlin International Film Festival has already selected six Korean films for its February event and now the Rotterdam International Film Festival, one of the first major events on the festival calendar, has followed suit by inviting five Korean films for its 42nd edition. The major European festival runs from January 23rd to February 3rd.
The ‘Bright Futures’ section, which showcases debut or sophomore features from novice filmmakers, has invited
KIM Tae-gon’s
Sunshine Boys, which premiered at Busan, for its international premiere and
JANG Kun-jae’s
Sleepless Night, which is in the midst of a very successful festival run.
Meanwhile, Rotterdam’s ‘Spectrum’ program will showcase
SHIN Yeon-shick’s new feature
The Russian Novel, also a Busan world premiere getting its first international screening, as well as
O Muel’s
Jiseul, a big winner at Busan which will be presented at Sundance in January, and the Chinese-Korean co-production
When Night Falls from director YING Liang.
As 2012, an enormously successful year for Korean cinema at the local box office and the festival circuit, winds to a close, the industry is wasting no time as it prepares to start 2013 off with a bang.
