The Korean Academy of Film Arts (KAFA, Director Joh Keun-shik), an institution of the Korean Film Council (KOFIC, Chairperson Han Sang-jun), will operate the “Airport Cinema Club” in the third-floor general waiting area of the domestic terminal at Gimhae International Airport from September 22 to October 19. The event has been organized as part of the regionally linked cultural programming that Korea Airports Corporation runs at its cultural hub airports, and offers a chance to discover short films by directors who trained at KAFA.

Marking the 20th anniversary of its Feature Film Program this year, KAFA will screen a total of 25 works through this program, ranging from the early shorts of directors who represent Korean cinema to shorts by emerging directors who have recently drawn attention at international film festivals. With the program running at Gimhae International Airport — the gateway to Busan — in step with the 31st Busan International Film Festival, which opens on October 6, it is expected to give visitors from Korea and abroad a natural opportunity to encounter Korean cinema at the airport.

The Airport Cinema Club consists of three programs. At “10-Minute Cinema,” three large monitors arranged in a standing-bar setup will present shorts by KAFA alumni directors such as Bong Joon-ho, Jang Joon-hwan, Choi Dong-hoon and Lee Ok-seop. “Cinema Warehouse” will display art books and screenplays, while “Cinema Card” will offer curation cards carrying film introductions and QR codes, allowing visitors to watch the films on their mobile phones. The Airport Cinema Club is free of charge and open to anyone visiting the airport, regardless of whether they are boarding a flight.

Director Joh Keun-shik said, “This Airport Cinema Club is an occasion to share with audiences the growth of the creators KAFA has produced over the past 20 years,” adding, “I hope it becomes a chance for people to encounter Korean cinema more closely in the open space of an airport, and to broaden opportunities to enjoy culture.”
