Korean Box Office Record Greatly Grows over in October 2016

KOFIC Announced October’s Report on Korean Film Industry
 

The number of audience and the ticket sales both greatly increased in October 2016. According to the report on Korean film industry by Korean Film Council (KOFIC), the total number of viewers and the total sales were 17.16 million and USD 120 million, which rose 2.23 million admissions (15.0%) and USD 20 million (20.5%) respectively from the same period of last year. 

Domestic films’ market share was 49.2%, which fell behind by a narrow margin to foreign films’ 50.8%. However, growth scale of local movies beat out that of foreign films. The number of domestic film viewers and the sales in October were 8.34 million and USD 58 million respectively, which represent 30.4% and 39.0% increase compared to the same time last year. Meanwhile, the number of audiences and the sales for foreign movies increased by 3.4% and 7.2% respectively compared to the same period in the previous year.  

The most leading local film was action-comedy LUCK-KEY in October 2016. The film topped box office attracting 5.72 million filmgoers. It was more than doubled from Hollywood blockbuster Doctor Strange, which drew 2.57 million spectators. Therefore, the best performing distributor was Showbox of LUCK-KEY with 33.8% of ticket share. 

At number three for the month was Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children with 2.46 million admissions, while Asura : The City of Madness stayed in fourth place with 1.62 million viewers. US horror Don’t breathe was in fifth place with 1 million moviegoers. Meanwhile, the top ten films of the October box office chart were four locals and six Americans.
