Admissions Share: Korean Films 48.3%, International Films 51.7%
Total monthly admissions to February this year recorded 16.67 million with total ticket sales revenue of USD 131.5 million. This is a 1.89 million in ticket sales (10.2%) and USD 73 million (5.4%) decrease from last year. Although this year’s Lunar New Year holidays (2/18-2/22) were a day longer than last year (1/30-2/2), surprisingly the numbers have dropped. This is partly due to lack of hit films during this time. Only two titles,
Detective K: Secret of the Lost Island (hereafter
Detective K 2) and
Kingsman: The Secret Service (hereafter
Kingsman) had a positive run. The number of people attending theaters during the holidays counted to 5.95 million this year, compared to 6.28 million from last year.
Audience favored international films in February with audience share of 48.3% for domestic films compared to 51.7% for international. Admissions and revenue for domestic films stand at 8.05 million and USD 63.4 million which is 1.86 million admissions and USD 8.3 million less than last year. International films also saw a drop of 30,000 admissions but revenue went up by USD 10 million.
Detective K 2 Wins February Box OfficeDetective K 2 recorded 3.58 million admissions and took the top spot at the box office.
Kingsman is in a close second with 3.14 million. In third place is
C’est Si Bon with 1.68, fourth place is
Ode to My Father with 1.63, and Hollywood animation
Big Hero 6 took fifth with 1.29 million. In the top ten list, four films were domestic, four were from USA, one was from UK and one was from Japan.
Showbox/Mediaplex Inc. Wins FebruaryShowbox/Mediaplex Inc. released three titles including
Detective K 2 which led to bringing in 4.18 million admissions, putting them at the first spot with audience share of 25.4%.
CJ Entertainment released seven titles, bringing in 3.96 million admissions and was at 24.1% in audience share for the runner-up spot. 20th Century Fox Korea who released
Kingsman among five films brought in 3.26 million admissions and 19.8% in share to take the third spot. 4th place is Walt Disney Company Korea who brought 1.29 million admissions and hit 7.8% in audience share, while Megabox took the fifth place with 1.13 million admissions and 6.9% audience share.
Chef Takes Charge of February’s Alternative Box OfficeChef took the honors of getting the top spot at the alternative box office with 48,000 in ticket sales
. Big Eyes follows
Chef with 42,000;
Samba is in third with 38,000.
Foxcatcher pulled in 22,000 to take the fourth place while domestic film
My Love, Don’t Cross that River is in fifth with 11,000. Total number of admissions for February 2015 was 229,000, which is an 64,000 increase from last year.
