Chul-soo, on leave from the military, goes to visit his girlfriend. Finding no one at home, he cleans the apartment and prepares to surprise her, only to discover that his girlfriend, she tells him she is marrying another man. With nowhere to go, Chul-soo stays at the apartment, over the express disapproval of Choon-hee, the new tenant. The two begin to fight, being different in every way. Chul-soo is loud and forthright; he likes the zoo with its crowds of people and animals. Choon-hee prefers to keep at a distance; she likes art museums and rooms with a view. The two at last achieve some sort of compromise in a screenplay Choon-hee is writing for a contest. They decide to write it together, and title it Art Museum by the Zoo.
