NAVER WEBTOON is the subsidiary company of Naver Corporation that operates the digital comic platform of the same name and handles the intellectual property rights of its online library. Launched in 2004 by KIM Jun-koo as a new service offered by web portal Naver, it has notably introduced a whole new way of consuming comics by presenting them as long scrollable web pages, something KIM believed would make reading comics in web browsers more pleasant. In 2017, NAVER WEBTOON was turned into a subsidiary company of Naver Corporation. Although there has been several film and TV adaptations of webtoons serialized on NAVER WEBTOON since 2014, starting with the comedy film <Fashion King>, it wasn’t until 2017 that the company started being directly involved in such projects. That year, NAVER WEBTOON teamed up with Woollim to produce <Student A> (2018), a coming-of-age drama film based on the online comic of the same name. Building on this first experience and bolstered by the success of <Along with the Gods: The Two Words> (2017), also based on one of its comic series, NAVER WEBTOON decided in 2018 to invest heavily in screen adaptations by establishing the comic-to-film unit Studio N.
