Sangnam Film Studio is a film production and distribution company founded by film director KIM Jae-han in 2012. It was named after the film studio that the United States Information Services established in the village of Sangnam in 1952, after the outbreak of the Korean War, to produce public information films. It was known at the time the most well-equipped and most active studio in Korea. KIM has claimed the name as he sees his company as the successor of the historical studio, since his company is based in Changwon City, of which Sangnam is now part. The company has so far produced two of KIM’s films, with both touching on social issues. First was <Thuy> (2013), which follows a young woman from Vietnam who tries to piece together the truth about the mysterious death of a Korean husband in a small village. Its second outing, <Soldier’s Mementos> (2017) provided a perspective on war radically different than the one promoted by the original namesake studio.
