Cineworld is director LEE Joon-ik’s film production and distribution company. Having started out as a commercial agency in 1987 (under the name Cinecity), it made a first venture into film production and distribution in 1993 with LEE’s directing debut <Kid Cop> (1993). It wasn’t until 1998 however that Cineworld really branched out into film with the production of JANG Jin’s <The Spy> (1999). The studio made its name producing period action film <The Anarchists> (2000), about the Korean independence fighters of the 1920s, as well as the comedy <Hi, Dharma> (2001). Cineworld is mostly remembered for LEE’s own works, such as the critically-acclaimed <King and the Clown> (2005) which famously swiped the Grand Bell Awards – seven wins including Best Film and Best Director – and became at the time the most watched Korean film ever with 12.3 million admissions. The company was also quite active in the distribution of foreign films in the early 2000s.
