CINE2000 is a film production company that was established in 1994 by LEE Choon-yun, with the name Sung Hyun Entertainment. Soon after it released in 1995 its first production, drama film <Deep Scratch> (1994), the company was rebranded to its current name. It then produced <A Single Spark> (1995), an influential biopic on human rights activist JEON Tae-il (his suicide by self-immolation to protest against labor conditions in 1970 led to the creation of the first labor unions in Korea). The studio is best known for having created the horror franchise, <Whispering Corridors>. Comprised of five films, released between 1998 and 2009 and connected only by the fact that they are all set in an all-girls high school, the series managed to be very lucrative in a niche market while also addressing sensitive topics such as suicides and same-sex relationships among teenagers. It found success again in 2013 with KIM Byung-woo’s chamber film <The Terror, LIVE> (2013), as it amassed nearly KRW 40 billion from 5.6 million admissions.
