Doomsday Book named Best Film
KIM Jee-woon and
YIM Pil-sung's co-directed sci fi omnibus was awarded the Cheval Noir Award for Best Film at the 16th Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal, Canada.
YEUN Sang-ho's dark and violent animated feature
The King of Pigs also added another two festival awards to its resumé, grabbing Fantasia's Satoshi KON Award for Achievement in Animation in addition to a Special Mention in the First Feature category.
Led by President Gabriel PELLETIER, the Feature Film Jury consisted of Jay BARUCHEL, Sylvain KRIEF and Maggie LEE. With regard to their selection of
Doomsday Book they noted, "The film impressed the jury by the intelligence and originality it displayed in its efforts to imagine the near future and its impending doom through a collection of short films, all the while displaying mastery in every artistic aspects of the production." Rounding out the feature awards, Jason BANKER won Best Director for
Toad Road, which also earned James DAVIDSON a Best Actor award. Best Screenplay went to Alberto Marini for
Sleep Tight and Best Actress to Majiana JANKOVIC for
Beast. AnnaLynne MCCORD also earned a Special Mention for
Excision.
Two awards were given to debut features. The top prize, the New Flesh Award for Best First Feature went to Crave by Charles DE LAUZIRIKA. YEUN Sang-ho's The King of Pigs also grabbed a Special Mention, with the jury of Jorge Michel GRAU, Michael BIEHN, Travis CRAWFORD, Anne DELSETH, Jeff DEUTCHMAN and Sonya KIM stating that they "wanted to highlight this rewardingly intense, merciless and grueling look at bullying and violence, that provides a powerful message that's still sadly relevant today, in any culture."
The King of Pigs also grabbed one of two awards available to animations, the Satoshi KON Award for Achievement in Animation. The jury of Robert MORGAN, Patrick DOYON and Érik GOULET praised the film "for its shocking and haunting narrative, finely tuned screenplay and confident visual style, punctuated with acidic hallucinatory visions. A distinctive and powerful vision of school-as-hell, and its devastating effects on later life." The jury also named Don HERTZFELDT's It's Such A Beautiful Day Best Animated Short Film and gave a Special Award for Technical Accomplishment to Bydlo by Patrick BOUCHARD.
Finishing off the awards, Samuel ARCHIBALD, Ant TIMPSON and Marc WALKOW named Stian KRISTIANSEN's Videoboy Best International Short and gave a Special Mention to Leyenda by Pau TEIXIDOR.
A dozen Korean features screened at Fantasia this year, with selections as varied as
KANG Hyoung-chul’s
Sunny and OH Young-doo’s
Young Gun in Time. The festival began on July 19th and concluded on August 9th, 2012.
