The 65th Locarno International Film Festival (LIFF) has revealed its line-up, and <Wo hai you hua yao shuo (
When Night Falls)>, Chinese director YING Liang’s contribution to the 2012 Jeonju International Film Festival’s (JIFF) Jeonju Digital Project, will screen in the Concorso internazionale, the fest’s main competitive section. The remaining films constituting the 2012 Jeonju Digital Project -- works from Raya MARTIN and Vimukthi JAYASUNDARA -- will screen in the non-competitive Fuori concorso.
A cornerstone of JIFF since 2000, the Jeonju Digital Project has each year commissioned three international filmmakers to produce an omnibus film that highlights the use of digital technologies in filmmaking. The 2012 version consists of <Wo hai you hua yao shuo (When Night Falls)> from YING Liang (China), <The Great Cinema Party> from Raya MARTIN (Philippines) and <Light in the Yellow Breathing Space> by Vimukthi JAYASUNDARA (Sri Lanka). Locarno’s fondness for the project stretches back to 2006, when the fest included every existing Jeonju Digital Project in its retrospective Digital Asia section. Additionally, the 2007 edition of the Jeonju Digital Project, entitled <Memories> and featuring works from Pedro COSTA, Harun FAROCKI and Eugène GREEN, won a Special Jury Prize at that year’s LIFF.
Jéro YUN’s <Secret of My North Korean Father> will also screen in LIFF’s Open Door section, which is dedicated to exposing independent film from non-Western nations to international investors, distributors and the general public. The film will screen as part of a subsection featuring filmmakers who participated in this year’s Cannes Festival’s Cinéfondation Résidence.
In its 65th year, LIFF is the tied with the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival as the world’s third oldest film fest, both behind Cannes and Venice. It will run from August 1-11, 2012.
