  • Finecut sells Arirang and others at Toronto

    Seoul-based sales company Finecut has announced several deals from the 36th Toronto International Film Festival, led by Kim Ki-duk’s documentary Arirang, which is screening in the Real to Reel section.
     
    The maverick director’s self-focused documentary Arirang sold to Italy (Punto Zero), German-speaking Europe (Rapid Eye Movies), and Poland (New Horizons), following sales to Japan and Taiwan. Arirang previously won the Un Certain Regard prize at Cannes this May.
     
    Kim Ki-duk’s next feature film Amen has also been invited to the upcoming San Sebastian film festival’s Competition section.
     
    Another Cannes Un Certain Regard film, The Day He Arrives, directed by auteur director Hong Sang-soo, sold to France (Les Acacias) and Israel (Nachoshon) in addition to territories previously announced - US (The Cinema Guild), Japan (Bitters End), and Taiwan (Catchplay).
     
    Les Acacias is a regular Hong Sang-soo customer and Finecut says that the company, “after scoring a good release this summer with Hahaha, will release Oki’s Movie in December and The Day He Arrives in spring of 2012.”
     
    The Golden Bear winner at this past Berlin film festival, Night Fishing, which was  directed by brothers Park Chan-wook and Park Chan-kyong using their new PARKing CHANce brand also did multiple sales. The innovative iphone short film sold to to Italy (Tucker Film) and German-speaking Europe (Rapid Eye Movies) after its sales for North America (Magnolia), Taiwan (Catchplay), and Hong Kong (Sundream).
     
    Having established a rapport with Park Chan-kyong, Finecut is co-producing a supernatural horror film with the younger Park brother as director. The project, entitled When the Bell Rings Itself, has been selected to the Asian Project Market at next month’s Busan International Film Festival.
