  • Journals of Musan and I Saw the Devil win festival awards
  • by David Oxenbridge <KOFIC> /  May 20, 2011

  • The PARK Jung-bum starring and directed hit The Journals of Musan (2010) has just picked up another major prize at a European film festival. The film which has previously won awards at Deauville, Marrakech and Rotterdam has won the top prize in the ‘Making Way’ section in the main competition at the Off Plus Camera International International Festival of Independent Cinema in Krakow, Poland. The film was a surprise hit in Korea when it was released at last year’s Busan International Film Festival and has continued to play in international festivals such as the Tribeca Film Festival.
The film stars its director as a North Korean whose life never really improves even after defecting to South Korea.

High profile thriller I Saw the Devil (2010) from the A Tale of Two Sisters (2003) director KIM Jee-woon has also picked up an award, this time at the 29th Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival. The gruesome film starring Hallyu star LEE Byung-hun (A Bittersweet Life 2004) and CHOI Min-sik (Oldboy 2003), which previously won awards at the Fantasporto and the Asian Film Awards, took home the Golden Raven at Brussels. The film, which went through censorship problems when it was released in Korea last August has also played at a diverse number of international festivals including Toronto, Sundance, the Hong Kong International Film Festival, the Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival and more.
